1/2/2024 0 Comments Thief 2014 video game![]() If you don't know what you are missing (aka the freedom of exploration) then it might be enjoyable, but otherwise it's just a sad experience. The original games had an amazing sound propagation system and Thief4 hasn't managed to even come close to replicating it. The sound system is also very barebones and can be pretty glitchy. ![]() ![]() The story is just an edgy copy of Dishonored, with bits of the old lore appearing for a few cameos. Not being able to jump freely in a stealth-parkour game is ludicrous. Pretty much all the parkour stuff is contextual, you can only jump, mantle, use rope arrows, etc at designated points. The only way is forward, you can never backtrack to earlier sections to a level once you pass an invisible checkpoint. At one point you are literally put on rails (the factory level), but even in general you are just going through linear corridors with an occasional split path thrown in for good measure both paths lead to the same destination tho, so it's just an illusion of choice. It's massively railroaded with very limited freedom. It's just not a very good game in general, period. Garrett is an absolute queen and I love him for it :D Garrett "I need to pay my rent and I wear heels cause I can" But that is all based on my subjective expectation of what I wanted the game to be, and I wouldn't pretend (like some do) that it constitutes an objective flaw in the game. Unfortunately the jewellery store was the biggest part of that gameplay and that was basically just a snack, so the experience of the game was a massive let down for me. Robbing the jewellery store in the first mission was basically what I want in a thief game, only more of it and bigger levels all designed around that concept. I managed to enjoy parts of it (very similar to another poster who described all of the city parts they enjoyed) but half the game was content I wasn't looking for in a thief game and the other half was only a partial glimpse of what I did want. Our expectations of what thi4f is "supposed to be" simply don't match up with the game. ![]() I think Thi4f is a decent enough game, but it's very tough for those of us who came from the originals to enjoy it. Great burrick Easter egg under the waterfall. I won't even get to the details that many reviewers on Youtube have already explained better than me (the mechanics of looting, the minimap, the unexistent sound propagation). The new Shalebridge level wasn't half bad, though, and the sweep action is glorious for the right reasons: it's useful, it takes some time to really master (time it, block it, make it shorter etc.), even if it feels a bit Dishonored and OP. The cinematics are awful, the dialogues are awful, how the story unfolds is awful, as is the whole emo-kid-Garrett schtick and the levels where you have to run/escape/be quick, plus the last levels are build without the possibility to ghost them. The story missions are not good at all: the best one is the first where you get through the city (because have I told you how much I liked the city hub?), followed by missions 4 and 6, which felt a bit more lootey than the others, but still not good. I absolutely loved - and I absolutely cannot stress how much I loved it - the city hub and the fact that you really spend a lot of time on the roofs, discovering secret areas, breaking into apartments, plus the little client jobs in the city are quite nice and fit very well within the city exploration.
